"Portfolio reviews: how to prepare and present your photographic work"

If you are a photographer and want to take part in portfolio reviews at photo festivals around the world, you must have an updated and properly presented project dossier. In addition, you need to know how to adapt to the dynamics of reviews in terms of presenting, explaining and showing your work.
This workshop is about how photographic projects are to be presented to other professionals (art directors, publishers, directors of exhibition spaces, gallery owners, etc.) in portfolio reviews of festivals such as PHotoEspaña, Les Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles, FotoFest Meeting Point Paris, FotoFest International Meeting Point Houston or Cortona On The Move, among others.
The training is aimed at professional photographers from the Balearic Islands. The maximum number of participants is 12 people. If necessary, teachers will select participants.
Technical requirements
To participate in the training, you must have a dossier or portfolio of one or two projects completed or in an advanced phase (between 10 and 25 definitive photographs). They should preferably be printed on paper. Alternatively, they can also be presented in JPG files with a minimum of 1,200 pixels on the long side, on a USB device, so that they can be projected on a screen.

Program
The workshop consists of two sessions of 4 hours each.
Thursday, February 20, from 4pm to 8pm
A session dedicated to theoretical training, in which teachers will explain the dynamics of a review, how to prepare the work and how to present it.
Arianna Rinaldo will contribute his experience from the point of view of the professional who views, while Toni Amengual will do it from the position of the photographer presenting his work.
Friday, February 21, from 10am to 2pm
The participants will put the theory explained in the first training session into practice: for a maximum of 10 minutes, they will present their work to the group, in order to do a real presentation exercise on which to work.
Biographies
Arianna Rinaldo is a freelance graphic editor and freelance curator. Since 2012 she has been artistic director of the international photography festival Cortona On The Move, in Tuscany, Italy. She is also the curator of photography for PhEST, a Mediterranean art festival in Monopoli, Apulia, Italy. In 2014 she was the guest curator of DOCfield, a documentary photography festival in Barcelona. For nine years she has been director of the documentary photography magazine OjodePez, published in English and Spanish.
From 1998 to 2001 she was the director of the archive for Magnum Photos New York, and until 2004, graphic editor of the Italian magazine Colors.
She regularly participates in portfolio reviews at Houston FotoFest, USA; Photolucida, Portland, USA; Discoveries / PHotoEspaña; Format Festival, Derby, United Kingdom; Daegu Photo Biennale, Korea; European Photography, Reggio Emilia, Italy; Triennale der Photographie Hamburg, Germany, among others. She has been a jury member of several international awards, such as the World Press Photo, the LensCulture Emerging Talent, the PHmuseum Grant, the Critical Mass, the Human Values OjodePez, the Czech Press Photo, the FNAC Talento Fotográfico or the Fotopress. . He is on the selection committee of the Joop Swart Masterclass and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.
Toni Amengual
After receiving a degree in Biology from the University of Barcelona (2003), he studied photography at the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia (1999-2002) and a master's degree in photojournalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2003). Then he decided to devote his life to the study of the most complex species on the planet, to which he belongs: Homo sapiens sapiens, making photography his working discipline. Since then, Amengual has worked independently on human relations and the relation of humans to their environment.
His work has received mentions and awards, including the ArtJove Balearic Photography Award (2005), the Nuevo Documentalismo Prize (La Fábrica 2013), the Best Self-published Photolibro of the Year (PHotoEspaña 2014) and the Mallorca Photography Award. Contemporary (2018). His work is part of the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Tate Modern, the MOMA, the MACBA, the National Archive of Catalonia, the CCCB, the FotoColectània and the Huarte Contemporary Art Center.
